You’re not alone. Writing is hard sometimes; let’s make it easier. In just a few minutes, you can build the foundation for a character readers will remember—and it starts with asking the right questions.

  • Step 1: Start with their Want vs Need.
    Every great character wants something and needs something else. Example: They want revenge but need healing. 
  • Step 2: Give them a contradiction.
    Make them brave but insecure. Kind but manipulative. Complexity = believability.
  • Step 3: Ask one deep question.
    What do they fear more than death? What lie do they believe about themselves?
  • Step 4: Ask one silly question.
    What’s in their pocket? What’s a food they can’t stand? Why? 

You don’t have to tell everything in the book, but just knowing will let details seep through and add color and depth into your character.

Though, now that I realize how long it’s been, there’s been some legit close calls since my last update, including a falling house and car accidents—no worries all walked away from—but the year was a roller coaster, SkyBorn got slid to a backburner and put on simmer while I juggled life events; moving and remodeling a house is fun but…a lot. Skyborn is definitely behind schedule, but Draft two was completed last night. I need to tighten up a few things yet before my editor gets it, but it’s coming.

Ok, I’ll admit it, it’s actually been here since December.
But, I needed to see the hardcopy before I yelled about it, then, even though it was beautiful, I thought I could make it better, so I went back to the formatting board and talked it into accepting a few more pages of illustrations. There’s now character portraits in the back too. ;) I have a video of the inside that I’ll upload shortly to the blog on my website so I don’t weigh down ya’ll emails. Like a pokemon, this is the ultimate evolution of my first series. Since the very beginning, it’s always been the end goal to have an illustrated edition, and to have a hardcover option available about time I finished the sketches was just the cherry on top. It is a piece of my heart and soul and a long long time in the making.

There’s an unlisted anthology I’ve got a shorty in yet too, but I’m not sure when exactly to expect it. Sometimes publishing is a process.
